Types of Rehab

Types of RehabRehabilitation, or rehab for short, is the process necessary to return to a normal or healthier state of being. Drug rehab includes a treatment plan that consists of counseling, medications and therapies to help the addict through the entire process from identifying the addiction, to withdrawal, to learning new life skills. The goal of rehab is to assist the addict in discontinuing the improper or excessive use of drugs, both illicit and prescription, and to re-enter mainstream  society. The severity and length of drug abuse and dependence will determine which type of rehab provides the best opportunity for success.

Is Outpatient Rehab Enough?

Outpatient rehab is a type of rehab that doesn’t require an admission or overnight stay. The length of treatment varies, depending on the specific needs of the addict. For some, an hour once a month is sufficient. Others may require more intense treatment, such as eight hours a day and as many as six days a week. Advantages of outpatient rehab include staying with your family and maintaining your job, if that’s an option. Some insurance policies provide better coverage for outpatient services than for inpatient facilities, which can be an issue for some addicts when choosing the type of rehab to attend.

What Is Inpatient Rehab?

Inpatient rehabilitation is provided in a center specifically designed for treatment of addictions. With round-the-clock supervision, the addict is carefully monitored for both physical and psychological problems that may arise during the process of detox. Depending on the type of addiction and the facility chosen, the length of stay may vary from a couple of weeks to six weeks or longer. Inpatient treatment may be the only option for success, if the addict is closely involved with friends or family who continue to use drugs. Separation from the environment that supports his or her addiction is critical to becoming and staying clean.

Combined Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment

Gaining sobriety and a drug-free life doesn’t happen overnight for any addict. In many cases, it is a lifelong effort. The first step is to choose the type of drug rehab that fits the addiction. For many, this requires a stay at an inpatient or residential facility. After going through the process of getting clean and engaging in counseling sessions to deal with the psychological issues of drug addiction, the addict will continue treatment on an outpatient basis. The follow-up care is important in maintaining accountability and for intercepting problems indicating a possible relapse before it gets out of hand. Excellent facilities are available for treating addiction as an inpatient, outpatient or as a combination for full support during recovery.
