The Risks of Drug Use During Physical Activities

Performance-enhancing drugs are becoming increasingly common among athletes

Serious athletes must possess a competitive drive, which at times can be rather fierce. Besides just the personal satisfaction of accomplishing their goals, athletes often push their bodies to extremes. Due to the competitive environment in all levels of sports, performance-enhancing drugs are becoming increasingly common among Louisville athletes.

Common Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Due to growing popularity, the following performance-enhancing drugs are being sought for the results athletes have been achieving while using them:

  • Steroids
  • Androstenedione
  • Erythropoietin

Some athletes will take a form of steroids, known as anabolic steroids, to help increase their muscle mass along with strength. The anabolic steroid hormone is testosterone, which is naturally produced in the body. Besides increasing muscle mass and strength, athletes use steroids to help the body recover more quickly from a hard workout. This enables athletes to work out longer, harder and more frequently without the fear of overtraining. Androstenedione is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, or ovaries and testes, and is typically converted to testosterone in both men and women. Like steroids, Androstenedione is known to help an athlete work harder and repair muscles quickly. Erythropoietin is a form of hormone used to help treat anemia in people suffering from severe kidney disease. Typically used by endurance athletes, this hormone works by increasing the production of red blood cells along with hemoglobin, resulting in improved movement of oxygen to the muscles.

Risks Associated with Using Drugs to Improve Performance

Although the improved athletic performance is desired, you may decide the risks of using the above substances are not worth the temporary benefits they provide. Included in the following are some examples of a few of the risks associated with the use of performance-enhancing drugs:

  • Heart and circulatory problems
  • Decrease in HDL cholesterol
  • Increase the risks of thrombotic events

Using anabolic steroids in the United States is illegal and because of this, many who use them must purchase the steroids on the black market. This poses additional health risks because substances may be impure or the bottle could be mislabeled. Androstenedione is known to decrease HDL or “good” cholesterol in both men and women, which puts an individual at greater risk of a heart attack or stroke. Unsafe use of Erythropoietin may increase the risks of thrombotic events, such as pulmonary edema, stroke and heart attack.
