Should I Change 12-Step Programs

Should I Change 12-Step ProgramsKnowing when it is time to change a treatment program can either make or break an addict’s efforts for sobriety.  There are valid reasons to change, and there are excuses.  Changing a program is not always the best option, so before deciding to change, you should talk to a counselor to discuss your reasons behind the change.  The instructor may need to just approach topics differently, use more visual aids, or hit certain topics harder.  These are all easy adjustments to make to ensure each addict receives the treatment he or she deserves.

Reasons to Change Programs

Excuses are not a good reason to change programs, but the following are some examples of good reasons to change treatment programs:

  • Not relating to the material
  • Requiring a more intensive form of treatment
  • Being unable to afford the program

Being able to relate to the material and the instructor of the program is an essential component for success.  Although an addict may not relate to every aspect of the program, the addict should relate to the majority of it. If an individual finds this form of treatment is not intense enough or the individual feels as though he or she needs additional support, the individual should seek some form of inpatient treatment.  If an individual is no longer able to afford a particular form of treatment, he or she may need to find an alternative program.  Some communities offer alternative methods, such as free or reduced programs, to help struggling addicts receive the treatment they deserve.

Importance of Continuing Treatment

No matter what the reason was for quitting or changing programs, it is important to continue and complete addiction treatment for the following reasons:

  • To have continued support
  • To receive all tools and knowledge available
  • To have access to additional resources

All treatment programs have a support system integrated into the program.  Continued support is critical during this time for a recovering addict due to the fact that recovering addicts need extra support to help them make positive choices.  Treatment programs are similar to classrooms in that addicts receive the tools, knowledge, and skills to help increase their chances of long-term sobriety.  By terminating treatment, addicts will not receive this information.  Most treatment facilities help place addicts in direct contact with local resources to help them continue with treatment and to give them access to community programs, which can help with housing, employment, and other services.
